
Charles Kraft writes in his introduction, 'So as we attempt to compare cultures, we need to compare them at two levels. The early antropologists and most contemporary travelers tend to compare largely at the surface level. The diversity of different cultures on the surface is very interesting. If, however, we are to really undertand the significance of those surface level differences, we need to understand the deep level assumptions and values on the basis of which people operate that surface level behavior.
